While heading to the checkouts at Costco today I was approached by gentlemen who asked me where I had found the large reusable Costco grocery bag I had on my arm. Instead of simply directing him to where the bags were I decided that I would show him. He told me that he did not want to trouble me as I was already in line but I told him it was no problem at all. After finding the bags we returned to the checkouts and he thanked me several times and wished me a wonderful week.
The store was extremely busy and there were large line-ups. He was two lanes over from me and I watched as a woman with a child and a large cart of groceries allowed this man to go ahead of her as he only had the two items. I could tell that he was shocked by her kindness and he thanked her. While he was waiting for his turn, he hurried over to me and said that as a thank you to this woman he was going to give her one of the bags he was purchasing. I watched the entire event take place and witnessed the amazement and gratitude on the woman’s face when he handed her the bag in appreciation.
When I was finished checking out I noticed the man standing by the food court with his family. I stopped and told him that what he had just done was truly wonderful. He said that the woman was in tears and said that she had had a very rough week and that his kindness had just made her day. He gave me a big hug and said that he hoped he could one day return the favor to me. I told him that it was not necessary, that him paying it forward was all the thanks I needed and had in turn made my day as well. With Easter just around the corner this was a perfect example of how God definitely works in mysterious ways.
