Fresh produce, dirty scabbing: The Loblaws model

Posted on July 6, 2015 in New Brunswick, Ontario, scabs, UFCW
Loblaws is pressuring its New Brunswick workers to scab in Ontario

The following is a message from Patrick Colford, New Brunswick Federation of Labour president. Colford reports that Loblaws is pressuring its non-union Atlantic Superstores employees in New Brunswick to scab on striking Loblaws workers in Ontario. It is reported that Loblaws is threatening retaliation if the request is refused. Unionized workers with UFCW are on strike at nine stores in Ontario, spanning Windsor, Chatham and Sarnia. An additional 60 Loblaws-owned stores in Ontario are voting on a contract until July 8 with a strike deadline of July 11. Rankandfile.ca editors

The New Brunswick Federation of Labour office has been contacted by employees working at Atlantic Superstores in New Brunswick. These workers are being asked to travel to work at other Loblaws-owned stores in Ontario where workers are currently on strike. If the workers refuse, we have been told that the company is threatening retaliation, including possibly reducing their work hours. Says Patrick Colford, NBFL President.

1,600 workers unionized with United and Commercial Food Workers (UFCW) local 175 & 633, working at nine Loblaws-owned stores in southeastern Ontario have been on strike since July 2nd. Another 12,000 workers, unionized with UFCW 1000A who work at an additional 60 Loblaws-owned stores in Ontario, are in a strike position since July 5th [strike deadline is now delayed until July 11th RF.ca].

A labour union could protect New Brunswick workers from the tactics being used by Atlantic Superstore to pressure their workers to cross Ontario picket lines to work, concludes President Colford. If Atlantic Superstore workers in New Brunswick want to learn more about how to protect themselves, they can contact our office.

Lost boot and Earring

If you were shopping at FROM BEAN TO SPROUT on Sunday July 5th, I have your boot. You purchased a pair of slippers for your daughter and a pair of cheetah boots/ slippers as a gift. You must have dropped one of the boots on the way out and I found it. I also found an earring that I think belongs to your daughter. They are at the store if you see this.

Fine young gentleman

I just want to thank the wonderful gentleman named Troy in Riverside that helped my grandma up when she fell while getting out of her car at Metro. Not only did he help her up he waited until the ambulance came and gave her his water and nutrigraine bar. (She's a diabetic). Good to see that there are still thoughtful people out there. If anyone knows him can you please put me in contact with him, i cant thank him enough and it makes me cry just writing this. I will definitely pay it forward. ;)

In search of a rental in the county

I am posting for a dear friend who is in desperate need of a place to live ASAP. Liza has a heart of gold, is a well kept, single woman, living the life of a pet rescuer. She currently has quite a few cats enclosed inside a barn type structure behind her rental where shes lived for many years. (cat sanctuary- if you will) Her problem is as such... The landlord has decided to sell the house and although Liza was given a two month notice, she has found nothing suitable that will allow pets. She is in urgent need of a place to rent for her and these tamed, clean cats, by Saturday! If you know of anyone that can help, has a house with barn type structure available, please comment below.

Kind man who saved us from the big dog on a county rd.

I want to thank the kind man who stopped his car to help me and my dog get away from a large German Sheppard. He stopped and distracted it while we fled. I was about 2 miles away from home and there was nowhere to run. Thank you!!! You have been spotted.

Zehr's Strike Advantages

I'm currently on strike at Zehrs. I would like to thank all our customers that are supporting us by not crossing. All our customers/ local businesses who are taking time out of their busy lives and dropping off water/ coffee/ donuts. You will never know how much we appreciate this, how it touches our hearts. CAW who comes daily, who cooked for us, thank you.
To our managers who bring us drinks/ ice/ cook for us, making sure we're okay, thank you.
Getting to know co workers better, so many great people.
To all the drivers who honk in support, sometimes that's all that's keeping us on the line.
Despite all the negative comments I've read on various sites I've experienced some incredibly great moments.
Kudos to the people of Windsor.
