Buy local New Year s resolution could put $78 million back into Windsor-Essex

If every household in Windsor and Essex County spent 10 per cent of their weekly grocery bill on locally made products this year, that could pump an estimated $78 million into the region.

Leamington Stands Strong is asking consumers to make that their New Year s resolution.

If you don t spend local more and more businesses will be forced to close, Katie Omstead, one of the founders of the Leamington Stands Strong buy local movement, said Wednesday.

Leamington Stands Strong started after Heinz shocked the town with plans to close its Leamington plant later this year. The volunteer group is fighting the anticipated negative economic impact with its positive buy local message.

Omstead said the 10 per cent challenge would turn into a $1.5 million weekly investment back into the region based on 150,000 households in Windsor and Essex County. It s not just about Leamington but Windsor-Essex and products made in Chatham-Kent, including Wheatley with its fisheries.

Yesterday 09/ 01/ 2013 while driving to pick up my son from school, this nice gentleman pulled up next to me on Tecumseh rd going west, around 2:10\2:15 near the Serbian Center, (he was driving a white Chrysler 300) pulled up next to me and honked to let me know that I had no brake lights. Just wanted to say you have been SPOTTED, how often do you drive behind yourself, so I had no idea they were both out.

Thank You

The lady driving the light brown mini van, it was very much appreciated.

There is a group on Facebook called Freebies R Us...we all offer and exchange items that would be useful to others. It is a total non-profit pay it forward group. In the last month it has grown by a few hundred members and we have a couple in particular that have really gone above and beyond our expectations. this group has really helped out some less fortunate people in and around our city. You know who you are and you should know that all your contributions are deeply appreciated.

To the very handsome bartender at Mamo Burger (bald head) it was an extremely busy night (Jan 9th about 6:30pm) but you were quick on your toes & great with your service. You didn't serve us but you certainly caught my eye. I'd of gotten your name but it was ridiculously busy.....

Signed
Smitten :)

AMAZING SERVICE! During that snow storm, FAMILIES FIRST FUNERAL HOME was using their truck with a plow to aid families with getting out of their driveways esp, those in the county with drifting etc. What business goes above and beyond to help their customers that way!
THANKS FAMILIES FIRST FUNERAL HOME for helping so many families from being stuck in their homes!!
What a magnificent service!

I lost my black pleather Roots glove at either the Staples or Tim Hortons on Ouellette Avenue today on the 9th. If anyone has it or finds it please comment. The gloves were given to me as a present from my boyfriend. They mean a lot to me and keep me warm.

To the EMS workers, Mike and James responding on Wednesday Jan 7th to the call about a 3 year old with a head injury, you are the exact type of people who should get in and STAY in your profession. Thank you for caring so well for my little girl and helping me to continue to remain calm through out the incredibly "long" ambulance ride. Thank you for talking to me at the hospital and making me smile. Mike, you are wonderful and never have to be apologetic for taking the side of caution and making sure my little girl was safe. And James, thank you for getting us to the hospital so quickly and safely (it only felt long), and I'd love to see what you look like after your year of "letting yourself go"!

A million thanks,
From a very scared and worried Mother (and Father).

After our latest snow storm I noticed a plea from a mom in Wheatley on a buy and sell group who was very concerned about having access in and out of her home because of the medical issues her son has, she was also concerned about her Disabled Sister in Harrow. I then took that plea and posted it to my status just in case it might help it get a little more attention and within minutes my status was tagged with the name Ron Thibert a complete stranger... With no hesitation Ron answered the plea! Ron had a large piece of machinery at this ladies house 6:30 the next morning digging her family out and then proceeded to her sisters house to dig her out! THANKS TO Ron Thibert and his kind heart the family was able to get meds needed and clear access to their homes! You have been spotted Ron Thibert!
I have posted a picture of one of the driveways Ron cleared out!
